There is the quick update of the day.

The New Orleans Saints did not release an injury report after Sunday’s practice. They don’t have to make that official until Monday. But defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin and defensive end Cameron Jordan both spoke confidently about their hopes of playing Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers.

“That’s the plan. Everything looks like it’s on track right now so I’ll be ready to go,” said Franklin, who has been out since he sprained a medial collateral knee ligament in the second preseason game. “I think (the timetable) is right where we had set it. I’m feeling good right now. God blessed me and healed me back.”

Jordan missed the last week of practices and the final preseason game with an undisclosed knee injury. But he spoke as if he expects to play and start on Thursday.

The Saints could certainly use both Franklin and Jordan to fortify a defensive line that will be without suspended defensive end Will Smith.

“It’s always good to have all the troops ready to go to war,” Franklin said.

Veteran defensive end Alex Brown announced Tuesday afternoon that he has been cut by the New Orleans Saints. Brown has started all three preseason games and been running with the first-team unit all of training camp.

He is the fourth Saints player to announce he has been cut as the Saints get down to the 80-man roster limit.

Brown posted the following on his Twitter account: “It saddens me to say that I have been released from the Saints because their a first class organization and I will miss it. Good luck to the guys and Who Dat Nation keep roaring… My family and I had a blast here.. Thanks.”

Brown started all 16 games for the Saints in 2010 after spending the previous eight seasons with the Chicago Bears. He had 39 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble for the Saints in 2010.

The Saints selected Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan in the first round of April’s draft but he hasn’t received much playing time in the first three preseason games. This move with Brown, though, probably means Jordan will get the starting nod at left end.

The Saints also picked up defensive end Turk McBride during free agency, but he has been playing right end.

Two Saints players – running back Chris Ivory and rookie defensive end Greg Romeus – remain on the failed physical list and are yet to practice in 2011.

Not practicing due to injury were linebackers Ezra Butler (left hamstring and sports hernia), Clint Ingam (right hamstring) and Ramon Hunter (right quad); running back Joique Bell (left knee); defensive tackle Tom Johnson (left calf); cornerback Johnny Patrick (right knee); defensive end Jeff Charleston (ankle); and offensive tackle Alex Barron (left knee).

Wide receiver Adrian Arrington, who had missed four practices, returned Sunday.

The New Orleans Saints number one overall pick, defensive end Cameron Jordan, hit the practice field for the first time Wednesday and said he was pleased with the results.

New Orleans plays more of an attack defense as opposed to the read-and-react scheme he used at Cal, but Jordan said he likes the new format. The biggest task now is getting acclimated to the various formations.

There was some speculation Jordan was better suited to a 3-4 than a 4-3 defense, but Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and the team’s scouts dismissed that as idle chatter. In fact, Jordan’s brains and skill set make him an ideal fit for Williams defense, which prizes athletes who can play at more than one position.

Jordan said Wednesday that he expects to see action at both defensive end and tackle, and Williams said it should not come as a surprise if there are also formats in which Jordan doesn’t take a down stance.

“It’s definitely going to be a good fit for me in the next couple of days or so,” Jordan said.

With Jordan’s arrival at camp, the Saints now have all six of their 2011 draft picks under contract. All of them are playing, too, with the exception of defensive end Greg Romeus, one of the team’s two 7th round picks, who is still recovering from major knee surgery.

“It was kind of a quiet, antsy anticipation,” Jordan said of the contract negotiations that concluced Tuesday. “I was in my apartment, just jogging around because there is no couch. My couch comes in three weeks.”

The New Orleans Saints agreed to a deal with defensive end Turk McBride on Sunday.

McBride, 26, gives the Saints a young pass rusher to add to the rotation and a possible fill-in during Will Smith’s likely four-game suspension to start the season.

McBride (6 feet 2, 278 pounds) is coming off of his best season. He started eight games for the Detroit Lions last year with a career-high five sacks.

He began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs as a second-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2007 and has 7.5 sacks and 115 tackles in his career.

Cal defensive end Cam Jordan, the Saints number one overall draft pick in 2011, remains unsigned Sunday morning, according to reports, but that doesn’t mean Jordan hasn’t been on the scene.

Jordan sent out a blizzard of tweets across Saturday night and into Sunday morning, that expressed shades of optimism and resignation. Around midnight he issued a somewhat cryptic message:

“Eitha get on da same track as me o derail n Fall off so I can keep goin,” he wrote. “Cuz u eitha wit me o u secretly wanna b wit me. So y b against me?”

Moments later, he finished his bulletins.

“Ok, done for the night, Was thinkn bout 2 many things,” he wrote. ” I jus want the next (crossing my fingers n making a wish) 24 hrs to hold better news.’
